Xiaomi SU7 EV: A New Rival for Tesla and Porsche

Xiaomi has unveiled its first electric car, the Xiaomi SU7 EV, which boasts impressive performance, range, and design.

The Chinese consumer electronics giant Xiaomi has entered the EV market with its first production car, the SU7 EV. The full-size sedan, which was revealed in Shanghai on December 28, 2023, is set to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, and Audi e-tron GT.

Xiaomi SU7 EV: Power and Performance

The SU7 EV is based on a new electric platform that can support both 400-volt and 800-volt architectures, as well as single- and dual-motor drivetrains. The car is powered by Xiaomi’s electric motors, which are named after internal combustion engines.

The base model, the SU7 EV, features a rear-wheel-drive system with a V6 motor that produces 299 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.28 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

The higher-end model, the SU7 EV Max, features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a V6s and a V6 motor that together produce 673 horsepower and 838 Nm of torque. It can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 265 km/h.

Xiaomi claims that the SU7 EV Max can outperform the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model S in terms of acceleration and top speed.

Xiaomi SU7 EV: Range and Charging

One of the most impressive aspects of the SU7 EV is its range. The standard model, which comes with a 73.6 kWh battery, can travel up to 600 km on a single charge, according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).

The max model, which comes with a 101 kWh battery, can go up to 800 km on a single charge, according to the same test cycle. However, these figures may vary depending on the driving conditions and the more rigorous WLTP test cycle.

The SU7 EV also boasts fast charging capabilities, thanks to its 800-volt architecture. Xiaomi says that the car can gain up to 220 km of range with just 5 minutes of charging, and up to 510 km of range with 15 minutes of charging.

The company also plans to offer a larger 132 kWh battery option in the future, which could extend the range to 998 km. The platform can even accommodate a 150 kWh battery, which could enable a range of up to 1,200 km.

Xiaomi SU7 EV: Design and Features

The SU7 EV has a sleek and futuristic design, with a low-slung silhouette and a coupe-like roofline. The car has a drag coefficient of just 0.195, which is the lowest among any production car. This enhances the car’s aerodynamics and efficiency.

The car also has a distinctive front fascia, with a large grille that houses a hidden camera and sensors, and slim LED headlights that resemble those of a McLaren. The rear end features a full-width LED taillight and an active wing that can adjust the airflow and improve stability.

The car offers 517 liters of space in the trunk and an additional 105 liters in the frunk. The interior is spacious and luxurious, with a minimalist dashboard and a large touchscreen that runs on Xiaomi’s HyperOS, a smart operating system that can integrate with the company’s other products and services.

The car also comes with a range of advanced features, such as a LiDAR sensor on the roof that can enable autonomous driving, a 360-degree surround-view camera system, a wireless charging pad, a head-up display, and a digital key that can be accessed via a smartphone.

Xiaomi SU7 EV: Price and Availability

The SU7 EV is expected to go on sale in China in February 2024, with a starting price of 299,800 yuan (around $46,500). The SU7 EV Max will follow later in the year, with a starting price of 399,800 yuan (around $62,000).

Xiaomi has not announced any plans to launch the car in other markets, but it has expressed its ambition to become one of the world’s top five carmakers within the next 15 to 20 years.

The SU7 EV is the first of a series of new models that Xiaomi plans to introduce, including an SUV that will be unveiled in 2025. The company aims to leverage its expertise in consumer electronics and software to create innovative and affordable EVs that can challenge the established players in the industry.
